Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition, thought to go back as far as 7000BC. Our ancestors would have had their hands fasted with a piece of cloth or string, to show their commitment in unity.

Handfasting has become a popular ritual today, with couples choosing to have their hands bound together with ribbons or cords, as part of their Wedding Ceremony.

This is a way of honouring traditional ‘old ways’ into the modern world.

You may both want to explore a Full Handfasting Ceremony and what that entails.

Your spiritual connection with nature and the elements could be celebrated, as you make your promises to one another, within Sacred Circle. In time honoured status, signifying your union and the joining of your lives, in a beautiful ceremony amongst those you hold most dear.

We would welcome in the elements, whilst completing the rituals to symbolise Air, Fire, Water and Earth.

Your Love story would be told through the rituals and the Vows and Promises that you would make to one another.

On closing Sacred Circle, you would be announced as not only a ‘Married Couple’, but as a ‘Handfasted Couple’.

Your Handfasted Knot, a special symbol of your love and devotion, will remain forever with you, as a precious keepsake of your Special Day.

Registering your Marriage

Don't let this put you off! All that's required is for you to make the standard legal declarations and register your marriage with a registrar. You can do this either before or after your wedding day at your local registry office, it takes about 15 minutes and can cost from as little as £46 plus the cost of the marriage certificate (usually £11). You will need two witnesses for the registration (no witnesses are required for a civil partnership registration) and there is no time limit on when it can be done.
